Operating System: UbuntuFree of viruses and loaded with productivity software and games. Ubuntu runs off a CD or can install alongside Windows and comes loaded with all and more of the following types of programs automatically.

The following programs are for Windows. WindowsXP preferred. Vista or 7 not recommended. iPods not recommended.

PDF: Foxit ReaderA small and fast Free PDF viewer with over 50 million users all around the world.
Text: Notepad2Free drop-in replacement for notepad with syntax highlighting.
Java: JavaThe peer-reviewed, opensource alternative to the Microsoft .Net developer library.
Java is required for OpenOffice and Gimp.
Office: OpenOfficeOpensource, compatible with all office suites, and free to download.
Graphics: GimpGNU Image Manipulation Program: a powerful and user friendly graphics editor.
Music Player: Aimp 2Freeware Audio Player. Great functionality and intuitive interface.
ISO Loader: Daemon ToolsLoad a CD into memory instead of burning a physical disc.
